MARC GARCIA-ELIAS i COS

Dr. Marc García-Elias i Cos, born and resident in Catalonia, studied Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, (1972-1978) where he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (1985) with the doctoral thesis «Anatomical study and clinic of fractures of the internal region of the carpus”. He specialized in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the Manresa Hospital Center (1978-1983). In 1986 he moved to the United States where he worked at the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory until 1989, where he obtained a degree in Biomechanics from the Mayo Medical School, in Rochester, MN. Since he returned to Catalonia, he has been President of the Spanish Society for Surgery of the Hand (SECMA) (2005-2007), Secretary-General of the European Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) (2005-2008) and President of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) (2019- present).

 In 1994, together with Dr. Albert Lluch Homedes, they founded the Kaplan Institute of Barcelona, for the promotion of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. Honorary Consultant of the United Pulvertaft Hand, in Derbi, United Kingdom. Coordinator of doctoral students of the upper extremity, he currently works in the biomechanics laboratory of the upper limb of the Faculty of Medicine of the Bellaterra campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​collaborating with “Valle de Hebrón Research Institute” (VHIR), and the chair of anatomy at the University of Barcelona.

 International member of 10 international scientific societies, he is the author of 78 book chapters, 162 scientific articles, and 460 conferences on various aspects of his specialty, anatomy, biomechanics and treatment of carpal and upper extremity pathologies.
